At SCOS, our orthopedic and hand specialists provide advanced Xiaflex® treatment for patients throughout Orange County, including Irvine, Huntington Beach, Fullerton, Anaheim, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Yorba Linda, and Placentia.

What Is Xiaflex®?

Xiaflex is a prescription injectable medication specifically designed to treat Dupuytren’s contracture in adults. It contains collagenase enzymes that break down the abnormal collagen cords forming in the palm.

Unlike traditional surgery, Xiaflex® does not require incisions or general anesthesia.

Who Is a Candidate for Xiaflex®?

Xiaflex® may be appropriate if you:

  • Have a palpable cord in the palm
  • Cannot fully straighten one or more fingers
  • Have functional limitations from contracture
  • Prefer a minimally invasive treatment
  • Want shorter recovery compared to surgery

A detailed hand evaluation will determine whether your contracture is suitable for injection therapy.

How Does Xiaflex® Work?

Dupuytren’s contracture occurs when thickened collagen forms a cord beneath the skin. Xiaflex® contains enzymes that specifically dissolve this collagen.

Treatment occurs in two steps:

Step 1: Injection

The medication is injected directly into the cord in the palm.

Step 2: Finger Manipulation

24–72 hours later, your orthopedic specialist gently extends the finger to break the weakened cord.

This allows improved finger straightening without open surgery.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Xiaflex® treatment is performed in the office and typically takes less than 30 minutes.

Patients may experience:

  • Temporary swelling
  • Bruising
  • Mild discomfort
  • Tenderness in the palm

A splint may be recommended for nighttime use after the procedure.

Recovery After Xiaflex®

Recovery is generally faster than surgical fasciectomy.

Most patients:

  • Resume light activities within a few days
  • Return to work quickly (depending on occupation)
  • Experience gradual improvement in motion
  • Participate in hand therapy if needed

Your physician will provide individualized post-treatment instructions.
